A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 in magnitude jolted parts of Negros Island and Cebu Province, specifically 09.97°N, 123.14°E – 5 km N 41° W of Tayasan at around noon (11:49 am) today based on PHIVOLCS data. It says that the quake is of Tectonic origin. The reported intensities are as follows:
Intensity VII – Dumaguete City
Intensity VI – La Carlota City and La Castellana, Negros Occidental
Intensity V – Roxas City; Dao and Ivisan, Capiz; Iloilo City
Intensity IV – San Jose de Buenavista and Pandan Antique; Ayungon, Negros Oriental; Kalibo, Aklan; Sagay, Negros Occidental; Dipolog City
Intensity III – Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; Legaspi City, Albay; Carmen, Cagayan de Oro
Intensity II – Cabid-an, Sorsogon
Several aftershocks were also felt and more maybe expected in the coming hours. While major damages to life and property are yet to be reported, PHIVOLCS also raised an ALERT LEVEL 2 for possible tsunami occurrence along the Western Coast of Cebu and East Coast of Negros Island.
The United States Geological Service meanwhile puts the strength of the quake at 6.7.
As of 1pm today, the NDRRMC reported 1 death casualty in Tayasan town when a collapsed wall crushed to death a child victim. People along the identified areas are advised to stay away from the coasts and if possible, move to higher grounds.
